Our inspiration came from the square exterior windows. The square became a recurring element throughout our design in furniture, materials and lighting. For materials we chose carpet for the conference room and office to give a more personal feeling. Dark finished bamboo flooring was chosen for the reception area not only because it is more sustainable, but also to make the lightly finished bamboo furniture stand out. To create calming and inviting spaces, we chose a light blue and light green for accent walls as well as upholstery. Orange was used as an accent throughout all spaces. The design of our CNNC logo is a representation of immigrants coming to CNNC individually from different cultures, uniting and helping each other to become a stronger individual.<div alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178906015719369362" />

My intent for CNNC is create an environment inviting to the immigrants as well as a place for the CNNC staff. I wanted to keep all spaces as open as possible and allowing light to spread throughout. The layout of my floor-plan is categorized in different areas. I have a hallway for private and public offices. The large vault contains a multifunctional space that can serve different events. There is a storage room, large conference room, computer room and classroom on the back wall. I extended the glass wall to signify the feeling of openness as well as keeping the noise level controlled. On the left wall, i have a large window showing that it leads to the ramp which take you down to the lower level. The connector hallway is a place for gathering since it has 2 conference rooms, public restrooms and a classroom. It also is the entrance to the courtyard outside. Entering into the smaller vault, it serves as the training room. It also contains a storage room, classroom and community kitchen. I wanted do the same to this wall as in the larger vault with the glass extending to the ceiling. The colors i used were neutrals and i accented walls and furniture with green. I would use hardwood floors for hallways, the open vault spaces, and reception area. Carpet will be used in the conference rooms, classrooms, and private offices, tile would be used in the restrooms and the kitchen. Throughout this process, i feel that this space overall is an inviting space for CNNC.

CNNC schematic design process

First 4 Perspectives...Interim Critique Drawings
<img style="float:left; The simple shapes, along with the 3 dimensional forms beside it, give it an off balance composition. The text allows your eye to follow the larger font then read the smaller fonts to see what it is all about. The colors are very basic, which gives does not attract the eye at first.

Pop Art
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R7y4Drgq5xI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/Ty1n6kC6HQo/s400/pop+art.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169208845673359122" />

This advertisement relates to pop art because of the use of color, text and format. The bold colors as well as the product give a since of playfulness to this ad. Line is used in this document by the way the text is lined up in the center. The font attracts the eyes and gives character to this composition. Andy Warhol is a great example of pop art.

Retro Modern
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R7y4Hrgq5yI/AAAAAAAAAIY/TGT0dHNdOxY/s400/2000_ad_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169208914392835874" />

Retro-modern advertising consists of strong images that are cartoonist or very animated. I chose this ad because the colors, objects and composition caught my eye instantly. The large swirly blue shape caught my attention and i felt as if i was reading a comic book as well as the text.

Nostalgic Remix
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R7y9ZLgq5zI/AAAAAAAAAIg/8ejckkZiJwc/s400/camp-ad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169214712598685490" />

This ad uses this kind of graphic design but only in the background and it is kinda hard to see. I don't know if this counts as nostalgic. The patterns in the sky of circles and other abstract forms make it a well working ad. The text is large to allow the reader to understand who and what is it representing. I also like the bright colors in this ad.

Second Try

<img style="float:left; My composition looks nothing like my two objects which adds an effect that makes you wonder what the objects were in the first place, i am very pleased with it.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R7EHVLgq5rI/AAAAAAAAAHg/EoFGdUsQ18o/s400/dkny_ad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5165918308019136178" />

Playing Around

I got my Adobe CS3 software today and was so excited to learn more and play around with it. Peak Performance appealed to my attention because I am fascinated with kitchens. The wooden beams were the focal point that drew me into this spread. Having two different views of the kitchen and the view looking out into the fields, made me want to know what was so special about this kitchen. The title was large enough to catch my attention, following the article which gave interesting information about the coming of this magnificent kitchen.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R6IKdytHlnI/AAAAAAAAAG4/oHZ1wiDro2k/s400/LPG2002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161699629863507570" />
"Architectural Digest" was chosen for the second spread, which was called Design in the Family. This spread emphasized a fabric, called Duralee, which has grown over the years. The colors of the fabric and the arrangement of furniture drew my attention to this spread. The integration of the visuals gave me an understanding as to what it represents. The first thing that I looked at was the large center pillow rather than the text above. The margins are different on both sides which makes the spread feel like two separate pages rather than one complete page; it also gives a nice contrast. The vertical column on the left gives a brief concept and picture that gives an idea as to what this article is about.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R6IKwitHloI/AAAAAAAAAHA/gwpXdjO1CJA/s400/LPG3003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161699951986054786" />
This magazine spread is different from any others, it comes from "Coastal Living" and features Tommy Bahama. The spread is does not use the boring white pages but printed textured pages with decorative outlines. The bedroom furniture displays the same look as the page which is an important factor when advertising products; thats what drew me in. The whole layout has a topical feeling, even the text. The text section uses other fonts which allows character to the spread as well as to the designer. I think this spread is well designed because it is unlike any other spreads and catches the attention as soon as you turn the page.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lpgoodrum.blogspot.com/2008/01/function-and-purpose-magazine-spreads.html' title='
Function and Purpose
Larry, my husband, was in the Marines and was stationed in Okinawa. After meeting me he became a returning customer, I was 21 when we met.”

How old were you when you got married and where was the location?
“I was 22 when I got married on June 20th 1963, in Japan. I had a traditional American wedding in Japan. My mother told me that when you marry someone, that is where you are going to die. Now we have been happily married for 44 years.”

What kind of jobs have you had?
“After we got married we moved to Beaufort, SC in November where I had my two girls. I did not work while the girls were little. But when they were in middle school, I had a part time job as a cafeteria worker in Colorado and Alaska.”

Have you always lived in Denton?
“Larry was a Marine for 7 years and then was in the Air Force, all together 23 years. We moved locations about every three years traveling with his job. I have been to South Carolina, Florida, Colorado and Alaska. Larry’s parents lived in Thomasville and we wanted to live close to them, we found some land in Denton and built our home.”

Were Larry’s parents welcoming?
“Yes, I stayed with Larry’s parents while he was stationed in Iceland. They were very proud of me. They thought I was a good housekeeper. A story about his mother and I started with the first meal we had together. I have never had nor heard of turnips, which was served at the dinner table. Larry’s mother asked if I liked them. Even though I thought turnips were not good I said they were. From then on she always made me turnips, which I have grown to love.”

Do you incorporate your native country into your American lifestyle?
“I cook Japanese food sometimes but I do not eat at Japanese restaurants because it is nothing like real Japanese food. Occasionally I make sushi however it is not all raw fish like everyone thinks it is. I enjoy singing Japanese songs at church also. I brought up my girls as American because I knew that we were planning to stay in the States. I did not want to force two languages on them. “

What were challenges you faced?
“It was very hard coming over here. I knew little to no English and was not well educated but Larry taught me a lot.”

What is your goal in life?
“My goal is to make the country better for everyone.”

What is your fear when coming over to the States?
“My fear was not being accepted as an American and by Larry’s family.”

Do you keep in touch with your family?
“My father worked for a construction materials business (gravel, dirt, etc.) and because of the war, it went out of business and then he became a farmer. I was very close with my father until he started abusing alcohol and then we stopped keeping in touch. I had many brothers and sisters, two brothers and one sister were lost in the war. I still keep in touch with one sister and one brother today. Once I chose to marry Larry and leave my country, my parents disowned me.”

What were some items that you brought with you from Okinawa?
“I brought with me a kimono and a child’s pair of shoes. I ended up giving it away because I knew I would not have any use for it.”

Is schooling different in Okinawa then in America?
“Schooling in Okinawa consisted of classes running from 8 to 5, Monday through Friday and half a day on Saturday. We went to school 240 days whereas American children go for only 180 days; I was 16 when I finished school. I remember first thing in the morning, we would exercise for half an hour, as a requirement. I played volleyball, and I was a runner. We wore uniforms that were black or navy; girls were required to wear a pleated skirt with a blouse. Boys wore dress pants and a collared shirt. When Larry was in college, I recognized his schoolwork as what I did when I was in school.”

How did you feel when you first arrived in America?
“It was a major cultural shock, I was very surprised but I was determined to make it.”

Did you have any terrifying experiences while adjusting to the American culture?
“I was with Larry and his family celebrating Thanksgiving for the first time, after dinner I was helping his mother clean the table. I dropped a glass and pieces fell into the leftover turkey. His mother said that we would have to throw away the turkey just in case. I was terrified because I was only there for a couple of weeks and in my family, we would of never thrown away food. I was so sacred; I thought that she would hate me, I just did not understand.”

Any crazy experiences?
“I was at Larry’s parents home and wanted to clean up while his parents were at work. I wanted to clean the coffee percolator. Larry came in while I was washing it and said “you took all the flavor out of the coffee pot by washing it.” Thinking he was being serious. This really confused me as well as upset me, he finally told me he was only joking.”

Pattern Perception

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/R5f3nytHlbI/AAAAAAAAAFk/LDUQ1nQXOs0/s400/goodrum_lauren_pp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158864161174164914" />

It is a flower, or a snowflake, a sun or an asterisk?
You decide...

BoliviaWelcome MatIAR 202

My country was Bolivia, which is South America. It is the poorest country in South America and has a wide range of ecological zones. I pulled my inspiration from the motto which is "unity is strength," which shaped the form of my welcome mat. Weaving is an important hobby throughout the country to make a living which is why the center is woven. The Bolivia flag colors are red, green and yellow with the Coat of Arms in the center. To welcome the individual to the United States, I incorporated the red because we both share red in our flags. I chose rope to signify a material used in Bolivia and cotton fabric as a well known material used in the United States. I wanted to create a spot that reminds an individual of their home and welcoming them to an unfamiliar setting.

<img style="float:left; Throughout the decades, the computer has traveled through many stages of life as well as technology. Computing plays a big role, whether it is for a simple structure or a complex monumental structure. Technology has increased greatly throughout the years, making our lives simpler. Living in 2008 and imagining what computing is today, it seems unimaginable to see how technology and computing will work in 10 years.

The roles of computing in design today results in the life of every human being. From expecting the doors at Harris Teeter to open automatically to being able to access Internet anywhere there is phone reception on the iPod touch. Computing has made life easier, simpler and more accessible then from the past. There is no particular skill known to be able to use computers and they are located in most households as well as libraries, which is why people use them. It is convenient to your schedule and allows you to explore, create or manage it anytime you want, especially since wi-fi is located in most coffee shops, restaurants and outdoor parks. It is amazing as to all the programs created to suit different needs of people whether you are interested in video games or architecture; there are software programs that will fit the need of anyone. The roles of computing have changed from being strictly a working method to an everyday method that is used for everything by everyone.

It is unbelievable to look back 10 years ago and to remember what was the “it” item to have. I remember getting a green game boy for my birthday. I thought it was so cool because I had that “it” gadget, but considering it had a black and white color screen as well as it was bulky and it had an awkward form, I did not know any better. Now, handheld games are more advanced because the way technology has formed. Not knowing what other new gadgets could be invented makes me wonder how technology will be in 10 years. It is moving and growing at such a fast pace, who knows what is next to come in the future. I feel that we are thinking and producing more products with the environment in mind, keeping them “green.” Computer software will be so advanced that actual structures will look so realistic you will have to take a double look. I cannot imagine the future, but I feel that it can only get better to help people and also the environment.

Overall in the article “Computing in Architectural Design,” computing has been used since the ancient times in some shape and form. From using a straightedge and compass to creating a multi-million dollar structure using CAD software, computing is important to everyone and with technology rising, the future is unexpected as to what will be introduced next.

Connections from the Pastiar 222

The Close to Home exhibit featuring Edward Loewenstein’s work collaborates many ideas of modernism and organizes them in a way that is displayed from the past to present day. As a whole, this exhibit comes together by connections, which leads from the past, the structures and the ideas shared throughout the space. In the space, material, light and color selections are limited. The materials, wood and metal, supports the whole design of the exhibit. The wooden beams are connected within the space, which allows the metal to be mounted and connecting the information evenly in the space. The dimmed lighting allows the focus more on the information by using spotlights to highlight the important facts. The exhibit also used the natural sunlight to increase the amount of light, which added very interesting shadows to the floor. The natural colors used throughout the space helped bring out the colors in the photos as well as the elements inside the gallery, such as concrete, the white and glass walls.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/Rz2rOfwZR_I/AAAAAAAAAEY/KcRDmp3RlM4/s400/sc00610c6d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133447415803234290" />

This sketch signifies the natural sunlight that is coming through the glass wall. As well as how the text and graphics are presented in an orderly, proportional configuration.

The images, text and graphics help to support my concept of connections by having consistent font, the sizes of the images, and aligned proportional on the metal. It had a very clean, organized and well thought-out message. I was able to follow the flow of the information as well, enjoy seeing the process pictures of how the project started from beginning to end. The trapezoid nameplates were a special feature that showed both silly and fundamental process parts of the project too. Overall, I felt the images, text and graphics made the project stand out, by having all the information and pictures in an orderly fashion really gave an idea of how Loewenstein’s work with modernism came about.

There were three different medias that reflected Loewenstein’s work within the space, the computer, sketch up models and the visual text. The computers consisted of the same material as the visuals but were displayed in way that felt less overwhelming than them. They did not give a feel for Loewenstein’s work only because the information seemed rather boring compared to the posters. The sketch-up models are a great part of the exhibit that showed how the space is used, but at times it was hard to follow and was fast paced. I felt that they were the less successful within the space only because it was hard to read. The black and white photos were very successful in the space, which connected to the past.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/Rz2t4_wZSAI/AAAAAAAAAEg/JFXObcxcxas/s400/sc00628837.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133450344970930178" />

A wooden beam hides the two Apple computers sitting in the back of the exhibit. The information from the computers are the same as the visuals but are presented in a different form.

Connections through out the space had an impact on the way I viewed the large overpowering structures. I felt like I was in a maze, looking around at all the information hoping that I would not get lost. The interactions with the spaces felt enclosed in some places and in others became open and free flowing which allows the viewer the understand the design
as it relates to Loewenstein’s design on modernism.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/Rz2yFvwZSBI/AAAAAAAAAEo/M4zfxfR2iSk/s400/sc0060f63c.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133454962060773394" />
This sketch illustrates the maze-like structures that allow the viewer to wonder in and out of the enclosed and open spaces.

Overall I felt that The Close to Home exhibit resembled both a house and art museum. With its information, history and images, the location of the display gives it a more art museum feel. However when interacting with the medias and reading the visuals, it gives the viewer a different understanding of how Loewenstein envisioned modernism and how it is showcased by the enclosing but connecting structures throughout the entire exhibit.
<img width='1' height='1' As a continuation of 221,where we learned about ancient cities and their structures, this class has drastically changed my views about fundamentally spaces. I feel that the late 1800’s and early 1900’s responded to buildings and spaces with such radical measurements, which now have shaped the world we live in today. I feel that buildings express their purpose on the exterior and relates to humans within the interior. Now in 2007, modernism is used throughout spaces and buildings to show how carefully objects are designed to meet the needs of humans. This class has also changed my thoughts about chairs, and whether they have been made concerning their purpose for either style, or comfort. Today, I look at objects, spaces and buildings differently because of this class and think about how it is designed and whether or not it fits it the purpose.

2. The Crystal Palace, designed by Joseph Paxton, in 1851 is one of my favorite buildings that we have discussed in class so far. I think that it is fascinating that it was designed on a napkin, built only for a Great Exhibition and later moved to a more permanent site. This building influences some modern designs today by exposing the outside in and also by bringing nature inside, just like Paxton did by building the whole structure around some trees. The glass and wrought iron materials are commonly used today for accent pieces and building facades. As we learned in 221, styles of design keep coming back from the past, which we refer to as the “design cycle.”
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/RxGYWXeNAGI/AAAAAAAAADY/euhDR1IbjhM/s400/300px-Crystal_Palace_-_Queen_Victoria_opens_the_Great_Exhibition.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121041761322205282" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/RxGYWneNAHI/AAAAAAAAADg/ADhVbFuZYzU/s400/300px-Crystal_Palace.PNG.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121041765617172594" />

3. To create a new perspective of the present but also contains the past is a difficult task in the world we live in today. We depend on the past as a guide as to how buildings are designed such as the US capitol building, which incorporates neoclassicism into its design. Without the past, the present would be nowhere in compared to where it is today. The present is a step that our generation has to take to move forward. In the present, things that help make the world a better place to live functionally and environmentally, is influenced by our actions day to day. To keep both the past and the present we have to be creative and reuse and recycle materials, such as wood but reclaimed wood is a better material because it is reused from old torn down buildings.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/RxGXVXeNACI/AAAAAAAAAC4/mraheowUGFQ/s320/UScapitol.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121040644630708258" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GR87_c-A3sE/RxGXVXeNADI/AAAAAAAAADA/ISY83d8Zt6s/s320/reclaimedwood.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121040644630708274" />

4. Backyard barbecue’s in the 1950’s and 1960’s was a “time of leisure” that was spent with family and friends. Hanging outside, playing games and watching dad finish cooking is what backyard barbecues were all about. Now in the 21st century, I feel that they have pretty much stayed the same. It is a time of gathering with loved ones and enjoying the summer heat while eating hamburgers and hotdogs, an all American meal. The concept has stayed the same for over 5 decades and still remains a tradition for summer. Since backyard barbecues have been around for so long, I feel that our generation will carry this celebration many more years.

Best of Intentions Just Won't Cut It-Charratte

My Sister's House is a innovative space that provides a safe haven for pregnant teenager mothers.
